Internally vs Externally threaded jewellery

What’s the difference?

Internally threaded jewellery: the post (the part which goes through the piercing)  is smooth, and the thread is inside the post. The balls/decorative ends screw into the post. Internally threaded posts are considered better for fresh or healing piercings for the following reasons:

  • Prevents Tissue Damage: The threads are on the decorative end, so they do not scrape the delicate, healing piercing channel.
  • Smoother Insertion: The smooth bar slides in easily compared to the ragged effect of external threads.
  • Better Quality: Internally threaded jewellery is almost always made from superior, safer materials. Because the post is smooth, during insertion, there is little tissue damage. For this reason, internally threaded posts are considered better for fresh or healing piercings.

Externally threaded jewellery: the thread is on the outside of the post, and the ball/ decorative ends screw onto the post. The downside is that the ragged thread goes through the piercing channel when inserting the jewellery, this can cause irritation to the piercing. Therefore, these are not recommended for fresh piercings.

Please note: Punktured uses external threaded jewellery for initial piercing.
